AKC’s Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program

The CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Many dog owners choose Canine Good Citizen training as the first step in training their dogs. The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your dog to teach the CGC skills, you'll discover the many benefits and joys of training your dog. Training will enhance the bond between you and your dog. Dogs who have a solid obedience education are a joy to live with-they respond well to household routines, have good manners in the presence of people and other dogs, and they fully enjoy the company of the owner who took the time to provide training, intellectual stimulation, and a high quality life. We sincerely hope that CGC will be only a beginning for you and your dog and that after passing the CGC test, you'll continue training in obedience, agility, tracking, or performance events.

Canine Good Citizen® is Now a Title!

As of January 1, 2013, Canine Good Citizen® became an official AKC title that can appear on the title records of dogs registered or listed with AKC. Dog owners who complete the CGC as a Title process may list the suffix “CGC” after the dog’s name.

Since the program began in 1989, CGC™ has been considered an “award,” meaning that it has not been listed on a dog’s title record.

As a result of frequent, ongoing requests from dog owners and instructors for AKC to recognize CGC as a title, dog owners will have the option of having CGC added to their dog’s title record and appear as a part of the dog’s titled name.

To compete or earn AKC titles, your dog must have an AKC number. This number can be one of three types:

  • an AKC registration number (your purebred dog has “papers.” You would have received these from the breeder), or,
  • a PAL Number (Purebred Alternative Listing) for purebred dogs of AKC breeds with no papers (such as rescue or shelter dogs), or,
  • an AKC Canine Partners SM number for mixed breed dogs, or dogs otherwise ineligible for AKC registration such as purebreds from other countries that are not AKC recognized breeds. All dogs can enroll in the AKC Canine Partners program.

For PAL (which used to be called ILP), see: http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm

CGC "Polish" and Test at BlooMoon

The BlooMoon Polish and Test is designed as a fast track for CGC testing. The cost is $35.00. It is perfect for those who have already taken a manners or obedience class. We review all of the requirements for the test and practice these skills prior to testing. The length of the class is dependent upon the number of registrants. We anticipate that most sessions/testing will be completed by 12 noon with a start time of 9 am.

Dogs who have not previously attended a manners or obedience class would have difficulty passing the CGC with the Polish and Test. We encourage you to attend a manners class if you would like to then add a CGC title to your dog's resume!

What you will need:
  • Proof of vaccinations
  • 4 - 6 foot static leash (retractable leashes not allowed)
  • Collar on dog
  • Your dogs AKC/PAL or SM number

This class is available by advance registration only. To register for the class please contact us at 940-644-2722.
